As we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme in First World War (known as the Great War at the time) then we might consider going to churchyard in Carlton to visit the graves of those who died in the First World War, but of course this would be fruitless as all those men are buried in the countries in which they fought.

Instead we have our War Memorial - these were erected all around the country in place of the graves of those who fell.
