Revision as of 15:13, 3 July 2016

On the 1st July 2016, as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme in First World War (known as the Great War at the time) then we might consider going to churchyard in Carlton to visit the graves of those who died in the First World War, but of course this would be fruitless as all those men are buried in the countries in which they fought.

Instead we have our War Memorial. These were erected all around the country in place of the graves of those who fell.

War Memorial in 2016

The front of the War Memorial says "Faithful unto Death", "1914-1918", and "Erected to the memory of the men of Carlton".

The names of all those who fell:

  • Ernest W. Hullyer
  • Edwin A. Hullyer
  • Frank Heath
  • Hugh Heath
  • William Mansfield
  • John Smith
  • Arch Taylor
  • Thomas F. Thompson
  • Harry G. Trundley
  • Harry Clements

Doing some research (assisted greatly by the [http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Cambridgeshire/Carlton.html Roll of Honour website), here is some more information about these men:
